Welcome Message

from Local Organizing Committee

On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee comprising members of the Joint Universities Computer Centre (JUCC), we would like to extend our warmest welcome to all delegates and guests to the 50th Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN50) Meeting & Conference to be held online from 3 August to 7 August 2020 in response to the outbreak of COVID-19 around the world and the fact that many nations will not fully lift their travel restrictions within the next few months.

The Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) is an international consortium of many national research and education networks (NRENs) in the Asia Pacific region. Over the past three decades since 1996, APAN meeting has been providing an international and networking platform for IT practitioners, academics, educators and researchers from the Asia Pacific as well as other parts of the world to meet, interact and collaborate on advanced network technologies, services and applications to support innovative research and education.

It is a great honor for JUCC to host APAN50 at a time when JUCC is in its 50th anniversary. It is also the second time for JUCC to serve as the meeting host. Incorporated in 1970, JUCC is a cooperative effort of the Computing/Information Technology Services Centres of the 8 government-funded tertiary institutions and 10 other higher education institutions in Hong Kong. Both APAN and JUCC jointly organize this event as part of our celebrations.

Unlike the previous APAN meetings, APAN50 initiates to hold a conference in conjunction with its meetings. The theme is “The Future of Networked Research and Education”. Held as a virtual meeting and conference, APAN50 will certainly demonstrate the enormous capabilities of APAN’s NREN infrastructure that strongly supports research and education at this time of pandemic, and the availability of exciting new tools for remote group participation. We are now working with APAN’s committees and chairs to providing innovative and engaging virtual environments with flexible approaches to scheduling and supporting the development of new collaborations, along with demonstrations of new technologies and applications. We will have a range of exciting keynote speakers and different varieties of programmes training workshops, tutorials, presentations, demonstrations, conference sessions, and discussion panels. Free registration will open the participation even wider.

We sincerely invite all of you to register for this event and join us to celebrate the 50th of APAN meetings and 50thAnniversary of JUCC. We look forward to meeting you online!

Best regards,
